Best Of Groton: Richoni's Lounge Wins Best Fish and Chips

has won the 2012 Best Fish and Chips in Groton, capturing 808 votes, or 52 percent of those cast by readers of Groton Patch.

“Top shelf fish and chips. Fresh, light beer batter, scrumptious!," wrote Irene Rose.

Dana Foltz co-owns the lounge with her husband Richard Foltz, who owned and ran a garage - Richard's Service Center - in Groton City for 24 years. He sold the garage in July, 2011, so he could work in the restaurant with his wife.

The couple bought the property in 2007, initially leased it out, then took it over in 2009.

Dana Foltz said she was thrilled to win the contest, particularly since the business is relatively new.

"I'm overwhelmed. I'm just so excited that we actually won. This is fantastic," she said. "I just have the best customers and the best friends."

The restaurant uses Haddock in its fish fry and gets its fish from Sea Well Seafood, then batters it. Richoni's serves two or three pieces of fish along with the fries, coleslaw and tartar sauce.

against Sneekers Cafe, which also received hundreds of votes. came in second place, with 693 votes, or 44 percent.
