Daily Five: EB Layoffs, A Submarine And CL&P

Five Things To Know Wednesday, Nov. 9

1.  Today is Wednesday, Nov. 9.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies and a high temperature of 62 degrees, then rain or drizzle this afternoon. The low will drop to 53 tonight.

2.  Electric Boat has notified the state Department of Labor that it will lay off 52 people at the Groton shipyard as of Jan. 6.  The employees are members of the Metal Trades Council of New London County.  This past summer, Electric Boat told off in September. The layoffs included carpenters, machinists, pipefitters and sheet metal workers.

3.  The USS Springfield submarine will return to Naval Submarine Base New London on Thursday, Nov. 10 after a six-month deployment. The submarine has 15 officers and 120 enlisted sailors and left on May 11. It visited Cypress. The submarine was built by Electric Boat.

4.  Connecticut Light & Power had nearly 2,700 utility crews working to restore power to about 9,000 people still without electricty Tuesday evening. Jeff Butler, CL&P's president and chief operating officer, said the utility was focusing on hardest hit areas in Farmington Valley and Tolland County. "Every available resource continues driving toward getting the power back on for all of our customers," he said. on Saturday, Oct. 29.

5.  Groton Public Library holds its book club meeting at 7 p.m. today in the library. The topic is Walking to Gatlinburg by Howard Frank Mosher, a novel about a teenager searching for his brother during the Civil War.
