Daily Five: Fundraiser Brings In $10,000

Five Things To Know Thursday, March 22

1.  Today is Thursday, March 22.  The National Weather Service predicts fog before 11 a.m., then mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of 66 degrees. Tonight will be partly cloudy, and the low will drop to 50 degrees.

2.  The Groton Education Foundation’s Dancing with the Stars event raised more than $10,000 on March 9 to support educational programs. The event was held at , and also brought in more than $1,000 through refreshment sales for the high school’s alcohol-free graduation party.

3.  An author from Groton will hold a book signing at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at United Methodist Church of Gales Ferry. , is among 30 authors that contributed to the book, “Pearls of Wisdom” which will be released April 1. The book is a collection of writings about how to make life better and more meaningful. A portion of proceeds from her book sales will be donated to Habitat for Humanity of Southeastern Connecticut.

4.  The Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Mystic is celebrating an expansion with a grand opening and ribbon cutting from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday. The expanded studio will include a new children’s program and expanded Zumba classes. The event Saturday will offer children’s classes and activities and raffles, with proceeds to benefit M.A.S.H. and Mystic CT Area Shelter and Hospitality. For more information, call (860) 245-0037.

5.  The Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation has awarded $6,500 to the Denison Society to help assess and stabilize the historic barn on the property in Mystic. The barn now provides storage for the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, Mystic Garden Club, and the Homestead. The Denison Homestead includes a 1717 manor house, the barn and 160 acres of land.
