Daily Five: Groton Police To Host National Night Out

Five Things To Know Tuesday, July 17

1.  Today is Tuesday, July 17. The National Weather Service forecasts sunny skies and a high temperature of 85 degrees. Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 71 degrees.

2.  will host the Third National Night Out next month, an event to promote public safety and teach children and families about the work of emergency personnel. Target is sponsoring the event, which will be held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Aug. 7 at Poquonnock Plains Park. a national event celebrated locally.

Organizations expected to attend this year include area fire departments, the police department’s bike patrol, K-9 and motorcycle units, Groton Ambulance, the boy scouts and girl scouts, The Department of Parks and Recreation, Gabriele’s Karate, the Groton Elks, Lifestar, the United States Coast Guard and the U.S. Sub Base Police.

3.  hosted the Connecticut Senior Open on July 9 and 10 for the 15th year in a row, according to a report by the town manager. James Becker, of Tower Ridge Country Club in Windsor, won the tournament by shooting 138, or four under par. He competed among 144 players, ranging in age from 50 to 80 years old, the report said.

4.  Bruce Fafard, chairman of the Groton Economic Development Commission, will speak during the Groton Business Association breakfast meeting from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. on Thursday at Mystic Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center. The event is free. For more information, call (860) 572-9578.
