Five Things To Know Today

Elections, Snapshot Day, And An Eagle Scout

1.  Today is Monday, May 2.  The National Weather Service predicts increasing clouds and mostly cloudy skies by tonight. The high near temperature will reach 58 degrees, then drop to about 45 degrees this evening.

2.  Get out and vote today. Polls will be open in Groton from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m., so taxpayers can decide two referendum questions: whether to support a $133 million school construction plan and a $6.4 million plan to rebuild Thames Street. In Groton City, voters will also elect a mayor, city council, treasurer and clerk.

3.  Groton Public Library took part in "Snapshot Day" on April 13, where Connecticut libraries collect data on how much they're used during a typical day. Groton Public Library had 822 visitors, 903 items circulated and 352 people using the computers, according to a report by the town manager.  The library issued six library cards that day, and had five programs with 80 people attending, the report said.

4.  The Groton Town Council will recognize Eli Morton, of Boy Scout Troop 12 in Gales Ferry, on Tuesday for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Eli built a vegetable garden for the Mystic Area Shelter and Hospitality for his Eagle Scout project. He has also managed the varsity basketball team at Fitch High School, is a member of the track team and is a member of Union Baptist Church.

5.  The deadline for getting a seat at the Groton Senior Citizens Club awards dinner is May 6.  The menu includes short ribs, salad, rolls, carrots and baked potatoes. The ballroom dance group will perform and offer a lesson, so you can also dance. The dinner will be held on May 17.  For more information, contact the senior center at (860) 441-6785.
