Police Advise Residents To Lock Their Cars And Stow Valuables Out Of Sight

The Groton Town Police Department issued a statement to residents Tuesday afternoon about a spike in vehicle break-ins.

Areas that have been affected over the past month have been in the Navy housing sector, the commercial district, and Center Groton.

“We’ve noticed a slight increase over the past month,” said Lt. John Varone. “We believe some of them are connected.”

Portable electronic devices, like iPods, GPS, and MP3 players left in vehicles were taken.

“The majority of these crimes are crimes of opportunity,” said Varone. “I’ll tell you what the connection is: unlocked vehicles.”

Police advised residents to lock their cars and stow valuables out of sight. Recording the make, model, and serial number of electronic devices will help police in the recovery of stolen items.
