Time Out For Mommy

Lots Of Ways To Celebrate Her Special Day

Joey Nigrelli’s great-grandmother Theresa would be proud.

The family jewelry store she helped start in 1947 with her son Joseph continues to thrive in Westerly as it approaches its 65th anniversary next year.

During these days leading up to Mother’s Day, the busiest time of the year, Nigrelli’s Jewelry sees many familiar faces walking through the door at 27 High St.

“We get people in the store who know my grandfather and my father (also Joseph) and now they know me,” third-generation Joey said. “They’re customers for life. It’s a family affair.” The Nigrelli clan running the store also includes Billy, Joey’s uncle.

Offering same-day jewelry repair service and being one of the last places to fix watches, coupled with having “all-things wedding” and carrying the Pandora line make this store a busy place. Pandora designs thousands of beads that can be added or intermingled onto bracelets and necklaces, with beads ranging from $30 to $250.

Joey, recounting that his great-grandmother worked every day until she died at 102 (and a half), said she knew when it was her time. He said when the last customer she waited on walked out the door, his Nonni turned around, walked toward the back of the store and said, “That’s it, boys. I’m going.” And the boys carried on.

Over in Olde Mistick Village, mom can indulge in treating herself to a special day at Lee and Company, a salon that Master Stylist Lee Regan has operated in Mystic for more than 13 years. Give a gift certificate to that special person to enjoy an array of pampering services.

Hair sculpting includes a consultation, a head massage, shampooing, conditioning and styling. Hair color or highlights might be just what you need to brighten up your look, or you could indulge in a customized application of Aveda make-up. Lee and Company carries a full line of Aveda products that help with treatments to hydrate, energize, calm, smooth, tone and cleanse.

The salon also offers manicures and pedicures and nail applications, including the new Shellac system that keeps nails looking great for two weeks.

Across the street at Mystic’s Cask ’n Keg, you’ll find “Mommy’s Time Out,” the harried mother’s version of taking a break from over-the-top activity. That’s the name of a Garganega Pinot Grigio you’ll find at the shop off Clara Drive next to the marine store. A truly decent wine with a less acidic grape that renders a softer taste, it’s also a bargain at $9.99

Owner Kevin Wildes also suggests Chateau Normandy, a sparkling apple cider, for $4.99; Moscato Rosé, a sweeter Italian sparkling wine, for $9.99; and Riondo Proseco, a highly rated Italian sparkling wine, for $13.99.

Whatever you choose to do for that special mother in your life, have a beautiful day and a wonderful time.
