Spineless: The Magical World of Marine Invertebrates, and Perspectives on our Finger on the Pulse of Changes in Coastal Invertebrate Diversity
Join Krystal Rose and Dr. James T. Carlton to learn about one of the latest exhibitions at Mystic Seaport Museum, <a href="https://mysticseaport.org/exhibit/spineless-a-glass-menagerie-of-blaschka-marine-invertebrates/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Spineless: A Glass Menagerie of Blaschka Marine Invertebrates</a>. The exhibit explores some of the inspiring ways that people have recorded the ocean’s mesmerizing marine invertebrates, an abundant, diverse, and ubiquitous group of sea creatures including sponges, jellyfish, sea anemones, crustaceans, mollusks (such as sea slugs and octopuses), sea squirts, and many more. They will speak about the major themes of the exhibition, including glassmakers Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka of Dresden, Germany, who in the 19th century produced glass models of spineless sea creatures with meticulously accurate anatomical details and colors; sailors’ drawings and descriptions of marine invertebrates found in logbooks and journals; the preservation of marine invertebrates as “wet specimens,” and contemporary, invertebrate-inspired art. Dr. Carlton will discuss some of the species the Blaschkas created in glass and which live today in our local waters, including some that have since become introduced species around the world. In particular, Dr. Carlton will explore the extent to which we have our “finger on the pulse” of changes in coastal marine invertebrate diversity.

Join us for a 2.5-hour guided tour of Long Island and Fishers Island Sounds aboard the EnviroLab Research Vessel. We will visit multiple locations for Seal watching as you learn about these unique travelers, the Harbor Seals, on their migratory journey from Maine. The Enviro-Lab has plenty of space on deck for optimal viewing and is equipped with heated cabins and a "vessel" type restroom.
Ticket Prices: Adult: $40 / Military (Active or Retired with Valid ID): $35 / Child (Ages 6-12): $25
We do not accept walk-ons. Advanced reservations must be made, and cruise registration must be done online. If you need assistance with online registration, please contact us during office hours.
Registration closes at noon the day before a weekday cruise and noon on Friday for a weekend cruise.​
For safety, passengers must be at least 6 years old.

Hedwig, born male as Hansel in East Berlin, fell in love with an American G.I. and underwent a Gender Reassignment Surgery in order to marry him and flee to the West. Years later Hedwig is leading her rock band on a tour of the U.S. and telling her life story through a series of concerts at Bilgewater Inn seafood restaurants. Her tour dates coincide with those of arena-rock star Tommy Gnosis, a wide-eyed boy who once loved Hedwig - but then left with all her songs.

After the 83 min film, there will be a short pre-recorded interview with director Frankie Kennedy (Ireland), we will then open up the mic to questions from the audience.
