Interactive Artist Sam Brown to Judge "Young At Art" Exhibit at the MAC

Special to this year’s "Young At Art" exhibit at the Mystic Arts Center (MAC) is local illustrator, web pilgrim and humorist Sam Brown, who will judge submissions during the exhibit’s opening reception on Saturday, February 25, 2012 from 1 - 3 pm. The exhibit will showcase the creative work of young people (ages 18 and under) from New London County and Westerly, Rhode Island.

Brown’s website, Explodingdog.com creates an interactive experience that encourages visitors to submit phrases online for Sam to illustrate. Submissions often range from romantic and whimsical (“Without you I’d be nowhere”) to downright quirky (“Check out my awesome spaceship! It can't fly but at least it can swim”).

The MAC studios will be open and offering free art activities to children during the reception. Awards will be given at 2 pm. First prize winners in both 2-D and 3-D categories and in each of the three grade categories, K-4, 5-8, and 9-12, will be awarded gift certificates toward a class of their choosing at the MAC. Ribbons and certificates will be awarded for Second Prize, Third Prize, Honorable Mention, Group Project and the Lil Maxwell Award for Creativity in each category.

The event is free and open to the public. Students are encouraged to invite family and friends. The exhibit runs February 25—March 24, 2012.  A sneak peek of the exhibit will be held during the MAC’s Family Night on Thursday, February 23 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.

“Young At Art” is sponsored by Steamboat Wharf & Family of Lil Maxwell and Dominion.
