Be a Volunteer Reader on Read Across America Day

In honor of the 17th annual Read Across America celebration on Monday, March 3, United Way of Southeastern Connecticut is partnering with local schools on a community-wide reading event. The Seussical celebration will kick off a week of reading across the nation as National Education Association (NEA) members gather students, parents, and community members together to share their love of reading.

United Way values literacy and the role of volunteers in the classroom. Last September, United Way mobilized volunteers to read to more than 1,200 children on the day of the United Way Campaign Kickoff event.

Now, United Way is again inviting volunteers from businesses, organizations and the entire community to join the movement to Read Across America and share their joy of reading with others. Volunteers will read to several classrooms in the school library. United Way will provide volunteers with several Dr. Seuss books to read and leave with each school as a donation as well as accompanying activities. Volunteer readers can expect to visit a school from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

The NEA’s Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on or around March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.

For more information and to sign up as a volunteer, or if your school is interested in participating in Read Across America, please contact Sarah at United Way by Friday, February 14, sarah.mcdermott@uwsect.org or 860-464-3323.

For more than fifty years, United Way of Southeastern Connecticut has been advancing the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all, focusing on the building blocks for a good quality of life -- helping children to thrive, providing basic human needs and community wellness, and helping people lead independent lives. United Way recruits people and organizations that bring the passion, expertise, and resources needed to get things done.

Everyone is invited to be part of the change by giving, advocating and volunteering. That’s what it means to Live United. United Way of Southeastern Connecticut is a locally-based organization serving the towns of New London County. Visit United Way online at www.uwsect.org to get involved.
