Stop & Shop Supporting Education!

Over 120 second grade students from Winthrop STEM Elementary School, Gales Ferry School and Ledyard Center School attended a partner visit for Exciting Science coordinated by LEARN.  Students were able to visit Stop and Shop in Groton for the morning and receive a tour of the store while learning about nutrition.  Janice Ceresani brought students to each of the departments, so that students could go behind the scenes and see where there food comes from and how to choose healthy choices while shopping with their parents.  Krissy Stamp from the UCONN COOP Extension also delivered a lesson on MYPLATE- a nutrition initiative, which allows children to design their own balanced meal, using all the food groups.

After a healthy lunch together, Stephanie Williams the assistant manager, provided nutrition packages for the students to take home and share with their families.  This was a fabulous program demonstrating how local businesses can give back to the community.  All of the staff at Stop and Shop volunteered their time and coordinated the events.  LEARN is exceptionally grateful for all their dedication in making this possible.  Exciting Science, is a LEARN interdistrict program that brings together partner schools from different towns, to learn about science and create lasting friendships!
