Daily Five: Charter Oak's Pledge, Savory Syrup and a Pirate Party

1. Today's weather forecast from the National Weather Service:

  • Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 54. Breezy, with a northeast wind 14 to 22 mph.
  • Tonight: A slight chance of light rain after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 39. Breezy, with a northeast wind 16 to 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
2.  Kudos to Groton-based Charter Oak Federal Credit Union, which announced last week it will donate $50,000 to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital’s Centennial Campaign over the next five years. The Centennial Campaign will fund a new, state-of-the-art Cancer Center in Waterford, in partnership with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for medical oncology and with Yale-New Haven Hospital for radiation oncology. “The new Cancer Center will bring extraordinary treatments and services to this region,” said Brian A. Orenstein, Charter Oak’s Chief Executive Officer. “We are proud to be part of such a meaningful and critical project."

3. Save the date for The Arc of New London County's sixth annual Pirate Party, which is set for Saturday, April 27, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Mystic Arts Center. Festivities include fine food, a silent auction and special guests. Proceeds support The Arc's support groups, respite, community life and advocacy programs. 4. Congrats to Turkeywoods Farm in Mystic for sweeping the syrup category in the Connecticut Specialty Food Association's 2013 Product Awards! The three winning syrups were strawberry, hickory nut and blueberry.
