Daily Five: School Board Approves Transportation Funding For Interdistrict Magnet Students

Five Things To Know Tuesday, April 9

1.  Today is Tuesday, April 9.  The National Weather Service predicts areas of fog, scattered showers early, then gradual clearing and a high temperature of 63 degrees. The low will drop to 47 degrees tonight, and isolated showers may occur after 11 p.m.

2.  The Groton Board of Education approved a resolution Monday asking the town council to provide an additional $100,000 to pay for transportation for students who attend magnet schools outside the district. The money is reimbursed to the town by the state, and it would be earmarked for that purpose. However, the school board said it would provide transportation for the students even if the council did not provide the money.

3.  The school board received two additional proposals on Monday from firms offering to help with the search for the next superintendent. The board has already received five proposals from potential search firms, and plans to discuss the superintendent search at a special meeting at 7 p.m. today in the school administration building.

4.  The League of Women Voters of Southeastern Connecticut will present a forum at 6:45 p.m. on April 15 at Groton Public Library about ways to support adults diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.  Panelists will include Carol B. Barans, a consultant for the Autism Services and Resource Center; Jennifer Bogin, director of the autism division for the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services; Andrew A. Feinstein, a Mystic lawyer for children with special needs and State Sen. Andrew Maynard.

5.  Kathleen O’Beirne, of Mystic, will speak about her book, "Gardening: A Window on Our Soul," at 1 p.m. on April 21 at the Jabez Smith House on North Road. Copies of the book will be available after the program and seating is limited, so the house is asking those interested to call (860) 445-6689.
