Daily Five: School Board May Rescind Cut of Interdistrict Transportation for Magnet Students

1.  Today is Wednesday, April 3.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a breeze of 16 to 20 mph and a high temperature of 46 degrees. The low will drop to 28 degrees tonight.

2.  The Groton Board of Education decided Monday to reconsider a cut of $100,000 for interdistrict magnet school transportation for students. The board initially approved the cut to save money, but then parents pointed out that the state reimburses the town for the cost.

The board is expected to vote on a resolution at its next meeting April 8, saying it intends to rescind the cut and seek the reimbursed money from the Town of Groton. The board is then expected to present the resolution to the Town Council on April 9.

3.  Senate Minority Leader John McKinney will host an informational forum on the state budget from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on April 4 in the Groton Municipal Building at 295 Meridian Street.  The event is open to the public. For more information, call 1-800-842-1421.

4.  The Spiritualist Church of Peace & Light will hold a Holistic Health Expo from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on April 13 at the Best Western Olympic Inn in Groton. Admission is $5 for adults, free for children age 10 and under. The expo will have face painting and balloon animals for the kids, as well as information on Reiki, massage, reflexology, readings and herbs.

5.  The Riverfront Children’s Center in Groton will present a “Musical Fundraiser for Children in Need” at 6 p.m. on April 28 at The LaGrua Center on Water Street in Stonington Borough.  Lucas Wong, pianist, and Angela Dinkelman, soprano, will perform. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door, and all proceeds benefit need-based scholarships for children at the center. For more information, call (860) 445-2831.
