Your Take: Would An Internet Sales Tax Help Groton Small Businesses?

The legislation could have a floor vote by Thursday.

This post was reported and written by Senior Regional Editor Elissa Bass.

Earlier this week, the Marketplace Fairness Act cleared a Senate procedural hurdle by a 74-20 margin, bringing sales taxes on Internet purchases one step closer to becoming a reality.

Final passage is expected later this week, according to the Chicago Business Journal. The Journal explains, "The legislation would allow states that simplify their sales tax systems to collect taxes on purchases made by their residents from online businesses based in other states. Under current law, retailers have to collect sales taxes only for states where they have a physical presence."

What's your take? Do you think an across-the-board online sales tax would help local businesses? How much of your shopping do you do online? Share your thoughts in the comments.
