2 Wives Pizza Event Will Benefit Matthew Chew Scholarship

Arts scholarship set up in memory of New London man and restaurant chef murdered in 2010

The restaurant that employed a 25-year-old man who was murdered in 2010 will hold an Easter benefit to raise funds for an arts scholarship set up in his name.

2 Wives Pizza will set up a candy bar as part of its Easter brunch menu on Saturday and Sunday. The brunch will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the candy bar will be open until 9 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the Matthew Chew Memorial Scholarship for the Arts.

The scholarship, which is administered by the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut, was set up by Chew's family and friends to honor his love of the arts. According to the scholarship's Facebook page, it is awarded to applicants who intend "enroll full-time or part-time at an accredited college, university, or institute, in pursuance of a bachelor's or higher degree in the arts, with preference for painting, drawing, or music performance."

The scholarship is open to both high school graduates and adults looking to return to school. It is open to 42 eastern Connecticut towns but preference is given to residents of East Lyme, Groton, Ledyard, Montville, Mystic, New London, Norwich, Stonington, and Waterford.

Chew, who worked as a chef at 2 Wives Pizza, was attacked by a group of six teenagers and stabbed on the evening of Oct. 29, 2010, as he was walking home from work. He died of his injuries early the next morning. The man convicted of stabbing Chew is serving 35 years in prison; two men convicted of involvement in the attack were sentenced to 15 years in prison, while three others are serving eight-year sentences.

The restaurant has been involved in other fundraising efforts for the scholarship. A pear and gorgonzola pizza invented by Chew remains on the menu, and a dollar from the sale of every large type of this pizza is donated to the scholarship.
