Cupcakes For A Cause

Students Decorate Sweets For The New London Community Meal Center

Middle school students from Groton gathered at Bill Memorial Library on Wednesday to decorate more than five dozen cupcakes for the New London Community Meal Center’s Christmas Eve dinner.

With some Hot Tamales, frosting, chocolate chips and Christmas-themed sprinkles, the Library’s cupcake decorating program resembled an edible art project as the students created cupcake designs like snow-covered mountains, snowmen, Christmas trees, ornaments and Santa Claus and Rudolph faces.

“I want them to all be pretty and delicious,” said one student, as she added a Hot Tamale to a vanilla-frosted cupcake to complete the face of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Hali Keeler, Head Librarian at Bill Memorial Library, volunteers at the New London Community Meal Center and has volunteered there on Christmas Eve. “The Center really appreciates the thought,” she said.

The Library has sponsored decorating events like this for years to benefit the local soup kitchen, but students used to decorate cookies rather than cupcakes.

“It’s our first attempt at cupcakes, and it seems to be working out well,” said Keeler. Students and friends of the library, as well as library staff baked the variety of  cupcakes for kids to decorate.

“It’s a nice project that brings the community together and the kids enjoy it too,” said Keeler.

The cupcakes will be served Friday night at the New London Community Meal Center on Montauk Avenue.
