Chelsea Groton Bank Raises More Than $11,000 for Newtown

Of the $11,078 total raised by Chelsea Groton, $5,980 was provided by the bank, $3,080 was donated by employees, and the rest was given by customers and others.

GROTON, Conn. – In company with people and organizations across the nation, Chelsea Groton Bank teamed with United Way of Western Connecticut (UWWC) to raise funds for the official Sandy Hook School Support Fund, managed by UWWC and held at Newtown Savings Bank.

The money will be used for the immediate financial and mental health needs of those affected by the Sandy Hook School tragedy, including the victims’ families, surviving classmates and school personnel, and first responders.

Of the $11,078 total raised by Chelsea Groton, $5,980 was provided by the bank, $3,080 was donated by employees during a dedicated dress down day (along with teddy bears for Sandy Hook students), and the $2,018 balance was given by customers, local businesses and other community members.

“Words can never convey the anguish one feels to see such tragedy and its aftermath, nor the longing to reach out and find a way to tell those hurt souls ‘I care, I want to help,’” said President and CEO Michael Rauh. “Action seemed the best response, and I am humbled and inspired by the outpouring of our community to our call. All of us, together—through shared trust, purpose and respect—are committed to making a difference and helping the Newtown community heal.”

To date, more than $6 million has been collected for the Sandy Hook School Support Fund and 100 percent of all contributions go to the fund. “We continue to be so gratified by the outpouring of support that the Sandy Hook School Support Fund has received,” said Kim Morgan, CEO, UWWC. “The needs facing Newtown will be many, diverse and ongoing. We hope that people will continue to support the Sandy Hook School Support Fund so that it can be a resource to help the community grieve, heal and rebuild.”
