Groton City Mayor Reacts To Pfizer's Decision to Demolish Former Research Headquarters

'As late as last week, there was an active effort to bring Pfizer and the developer to an agreement," Mayor Marian Galbraith says.

Below is a statement by City of Groton Mayor Marian Galbraith regarding Pfizer's decision to demolish its former research headquarters:

As the Mayor of the City of Groton, I am disappointed in Pfizer Inc.’s announcement today to raze its former research site known as Building 118.

Since the City first became aware that Pfizer was considering the demolition of this valuable laboratory and office building, I have worked diligently to encourage Pfizer to reconsider that course of action.

Working with the Town of Groton, I used the City’s resources to engage the Governor’s office, the Department of Economic and Community Development, and our region’s legislative delegation to provide the assistance and support necessary to move forward the redevelopment and reuse of Building 118.

It is in the City, the Town, the region and the State’s best interest to reuse this building and all underutilized areas of the Pfizer campus for economic development initiatives that protect jobs, the tax base and the quality of life in the City, Town, region and State.

To that end, I brought to the State’s attention a viable developer with a proven track record. This developer was not only willing and capable of purchasing and re-using the building but had a tenant who had declared their interest in leasing a substantial area of the building.

As late as last week, there was an active effort to bring Pfizer and the developer to an agreement. The State made a substantial commitment toward bringing that agreement to fruition.

It is unfortunate that despite all of our efforts and a viable alternative, Pfizer has decided to demolish this asset and thereby eliminate a significant opportunity for economic growth in the region. I urge them to reconsider. - Marian Galbraith
