Why Destroy Small Business?

Covering local opinion, events and personalities in the Groton, Mystic, Noank area

                                                                                                                                                       by Ed Johnson

Once again, small business enterprises are threatened, this time by CT state politics connected with the sale of liquor on Sundays. The actual addition of Sunday itself is not the major problem, but the additional changes being proposed by Governor Malloy could result in unfair advantages to the big-box large retail chain stores. These changes involve a release of the existing fair price protections and location restrictions which threaten to put approximately 1200 CT independent package stores out of business.

Mike & Mary Edgerton, the recent new owners of the Universal Package Store in Noank advocate that we, as citizens, contact our local and state representatives, along with the Governor himself, expressing strongly our desire that these changes NOT be enacted and that small businesses in CT continue to be protected by the current regulations.

Being open on Sunday is one thing, but changing the laws in favor of the big chain stores is not fair (and we've seen ENOUGH of that nonsense lately).
