Burning Question Of The Week: Should Groton Invest $5.1 Million In Its Police Station?

The Groton Town Council toured the station May 1.

 

Groton Police Chief Michael Crowleyin its booking areas and prisoner cells.

Crowley said officers have been assaulted by suspects in the booking room because it’s not set up property, security cameras have blind spots when monitoring the cells and people have tried to hurt themselves while they’re being held.

The police department has asked for a $5.1 million renovation of the older portion of the station, which was built in 1977. The renovation would include a larger secure garage area for police officers and marshals loading and unloading prisoners.

If the request goes forward, it would appear before voters in a November referendum.
