Daily Five: Fitch Students Score Exceptional Achievement

Five Things To Know Wednesday, Dec. 14.

1.  Today is Wednesday, Dec. 14.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a high temperature of 44 degrees and increasing clouds tonight. The low will fall to 38 and there's a slight chance of rain after 4 a.m.

2.  Eleven students from Fitch Hich School have been recognized by the state for scoring at the advanced level on all sections of the Connecticut Academic Performance Test.  About 2,000 students statewide scored straight fives on the test, which measures achievement in math, reading, writing and science. “I’m very proud of you, all of you,” school board member Chaz Zezulka told seven of the students who attended the board meeting Monday night.

The 11 students are: Tyler Ackley, Alyssa Denno, Kailyn Doiron, Clare Doyle, Alec Franklin, Peter Houser, Bryn Lalonde, Katherine Mason, Erika Mayer, Stacia Pombrio, and Christina Szczesny.

3.  The Board of Education voted 6-3 Monday to elect Kirsten Hoyt as its new chairperson and Beth Gianacoplos as its vice chair. Board Members Beverly Washington, Rita Volkmann and newcomer Shelley Gardner voted against. Motions to elect Washington chairperson and Volkmann vice chair failed by a vote of 3-6.

4.  Three shipmates from the Naval Submarine School have created a sculpture from the donated canned and dry food collected for the school's annual food drive, the submarine school said in a press release. "We started out just stacking the items to take up less floor space in a passageway and as we stacked, it just took on a life and shape of its own," Cameron Roth said in the release. Kyle Nelson and Jordan Ryerson also worked on the tower. The food drive ends today and benefits the New London Community Meal Center.

5.  Groton Public Library's book club will discuss the book "The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet" by David Mitchell at 7 p.m. today. The novel is set in Japan, where Jacob, a clerk, falls in love with a midwife. The book club is free and open to the public.
