Daily Five: 316 Homeowners Informally Appeal Assessments

Five Things To Know, Wednesday Nov. 30

1.  Today is Wednesday, Nov. 30.  The National Weather Service predicts mostly sunny skies, a high temperature of 55 degrees and a low of 36 tonight.

2.  The c this year has made 316 appointments with homeowners appealing their assessment through informal review, Town Assessor Mary Gardner said. The company, Tyler/CLT, has completed 175 of those appointments and will hold appeals through Friday. Groton has about 12,000 residential property accounts.  Commercial assessments will go out shortly.

3.  Two groups have asked Groton to use the Esker Point Beach parking lot.  The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses is remodeling its hall on Flanders Road and wants to use the beach parking lot during the project until Dec. 18. On weekends, up to 100 cars could use the lot. A second group, Ocean State Transit, which provides school bus driving safety lessons, has also asked to use the lot.

4.  The Mystic River Bridge will stop opening on Dec. 1 to accommodate the next phase of rehabilitation work. Alternating one-way traffic will start on Jan. 3, and normal operation of the bridge will begin on April 16, 2012.

5.  The Hobby Lobby Shoppe in the Groton Senior Center is selling hand-knit items and jewelry for the holidays if you're looking for something different and local. The shop also offers books by local authors, kitchen towels and aprons, and will be open from 4 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 7 and Dec. 13.
