Daily Five: Schools To Complete Survey On Bullying

Five Things To Know, Thursday, Jan. 26

1.  Today is Thursday, Jan. 26.  The National Weather Service predicts a slight chance of flurries this morning, then a slight chance of rain this afternoon. It'll be mostly cloudy otherwise, with a high temperature of 41 degrees. There's an 80 percent chance of rain tonight.

2.  The Groton School Department has compiled a survey to assess the amount of bullying that goes on in school. The survey asks questions of the schools like "How many students report being bullied?" and "How many students are afraid of being bullied in school?" The survey also asks for the types of bullying, listing categories like verbal, physical, rumors, racial, sexual and cyber. The survey is part of the district's Safe School Climate Plan, and is expected to be completed by the spring.

3.  Todd Gipstein, a photographer, writer and producer for almost 40 years, will give a one-hour multi-media presentation called "Geography of the Human Spirit", at 7 p.m. on Wednesdy, Feb. 1 at . Gipstein, who takes photos under contract for National Geographic, will reflect on topics including the Vietnam War Memorial, the space program, the Boston Marathon, and 9/11. Gipstein's work has won more than 40 awards in media festivals. The program is free and open to the public.

4.  will hold an informational night for freshmen, sophomores and their parents to offer an overview of advanced studies at the school. The session will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 8 in the high school cafeteria, and will provide information about advanced placement and IB classes.

5.  The Missoula Children's Theatre is holding an open audition starting at 4 p.m. on Monday at ISAAC School in New London. The theater will cast about 50 to 60 children, including local students in kindergarten through grade 5, for its production of The Secret Garden. Performances are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Feb. 4. Participation in the audition is free, but not all children will be chosen.  Those who want to audition must arrive at the starting time and stay the full two hours until the audition session is over. Rehearsals will be held daily from 4 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
