Daily Five: Meetings On Middle School Consolidation

Five Things To Know, Wednesday, Dec. 28

1.  Today is Wednesday, Dec. 28.  It'll be sunny and windy. The National Weather Service predicts partly sunny skies, a high temperature of 44 degrees and a west wind of 18 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 38 mph. The low will fall to 22 degrees tonight.

2.  The school department is scheduling seven community meetings to hear from parents, staff, students and others about the transition to two middle schools. The plan is to hear concerns about specific programs and brainstorm ways to address those issues. Topics will include academic programs, music, extra-curricular activities/sports, transportation/redistricting, security, transition, and special education, according to the Groton Public Schools website.

3.  Ken Richards, chief of the , has asked the state to donate a 7.89 acre portion of the Mystic Education Center property to the fire district for training. Richards made the request in a Dec. 15 letter to State Sen. Andrew Maynard. , and the property is being advertised to developers.

4.  If you're looking for something to do with the kids, Groton Public Library is offering three programs in the next three days. Children can make a bird feeder from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, take part in "Lego Fun" from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Thursday, and stop in at the New Year Party from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday. Registration is not required for the bird feeder or Lego program. To register for the New Year Party, call (860) 441-6750.

5.  UConn Game Watch is coming up at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the . The women's basketball team plays Notre Dame at 4 p.m. The UConn Alumni Association will provide free pizza, soda, punch and popcorn at half time, and the senior center has transportation if you need it. The program is free, but you must register by calling (860) 441-6785.
