Daily Five: New Maritime Collection At Library

Five things to know for Tuesday Jan. 10, 2012

1. Today is Tuesday Jan. 10, 2012. Mild temperatures are expected to continue, as noaa.gov calls for a mostly cloudy start, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 47. West wind between 10 and 16 mph. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 29. North wind between 8 and 11 mph.

2. Today is the Republican presidential primary in New Hampshire, the first primary of the 2012 election season. You can follow what's going on all day and night in New Hampshire on our Patches in that state, including Portsmouth Patch, Exeter Patch, and Hampton-North Hampton Patch.

4. On Sunday, Friendly's shut down nine of its restaurants in Connecticut, , Branford and Wallingford. The Mystic Friendly's remains open.

5. The "is pleased to announce the creation of the Gretchen Hammerstein Memorial Maritime Collection in honor of the Library’s former director," according to the libary's January 2012 newsletter (pictured). "The collection will feature books, DVDs and other materials related to sailing, boating and maritime activities. The collection will be added to regularly, and the materials will be available for checkout. Gretchen Hammerstein served as the director of the Groton Public Library from 1974 to 1986. She began her career at the original library (now home of the Human Services Department) and when it became clear that it was no longer adequate to meet the needs of the community, she worked with determination and vision to create the existing building on Route 117. Many in the community called it 'the house that Gretchen built.' The Library opened in 1977.
