Daily Five: A Civilian Honored, The Budget and Patch

Five Things To Know Thursday, April 19

 

1.  Today is Thursday, April 19.  The National Weather Service predicts mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of 59 degrees. Tonight will be clear, with a low of 45 degrees.

2.  For the first time, Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton is naming a facility after a civilian employee. The base will dedicate its Hazardous Waste Transfer, Storage, and Disposal Facility to Linda J. Tirrell, a former environmental protection specialist.

Tirrell, of North Stonington, worked at the sub base for more than 30 years, and oversaw design and construction of the facility that will bear her name. She died in December 2010, after a year-long fight with cancer. Her husband, Alan Tirrell, and daughters will attend a ceremony Friday dedicating the facility in her memory.

3.  The Groton Town Council finished budget deliberations Tuesday, adding $150,000 to the town’s contingency fund and $200,000 for capital projects such as roads. The council also reduced spending on a park improvement plan and eliminated $75,000 for an aquatics center.  on the proposed budget and tax mill rate, and present them to the council next week.

4.  Groton has recorded one house sale over $500,000 so far this month. Bruce A. Blye, of La Quinta, Calif., sold 15 Grove Avenue for $749,000 on March 26, according to land records. The property transfer was recorded in Groton Town Hall on April 9.
