Daily Five: A Thank You to Groton Police and Continuing A Tradition

Five Things To Know, Thursday, Feb. 28

1.  Today is Thursday, Feb. 28.  The National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies, a high temperature of 45 degrees and a 40 percent chance of showers. The low will drop to 37 degrees tonight.

2.  The Groton Police Department sent officers to Newtown to provide mutual aid after the shooting at Sandy Hook, and they received a special thank you, the town manager’s weekly report said. On Feb. 13, a tray of homemade cookies was brought to the station, along with cards made by students and parents from the school.

“Chief (Michael) Crowley was personally humbled that these citizens and children took the time and effort to make and deliver these items, even as they are still grieving and struggling with this devastating and horrific event,” the report said.

3.  The Mystic & Noank Library has posted this message on the Facebook page:
“We are thrilled and humbled to let you know that Whyevernot has donated their beautiful Valentine hearts to our Library. What a wonderful way to keep the Valentine tradition going. Next February, we'll invite everyone to come make a special valentine for display, just as you did at Whyevernot. Thank you Martha and Pam! You both have been such wonderful supporters!”

4.  Groton-based Charter Oak Federal Credit Union and Putnam’s Quiet Corner Community Credit Union, Inc., have filed a request with regulators to merge, according to a news release.

The merger needs state and federal approval, along with approval by the Quiet Corner members. If approved, the merger would expand Charter Oak’s assets, provide for more growth in Windham County, and give Quiet Corner members access to Charter Oak branches, along with the services they offer.

5.  The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut will host a business breakfast March 15 on the role of construction in the economy. The breakfast will be held from 7:45 a.m. until 9:15 a.m. at the Groton Inn & Suites on Gold Star Highway.

Speakers and panelists will include Peter M. Gioia, vice president and economist for the Connecticut Business & Industry Association; State Comptroller Kevin Lembo; Jim Williams, president of the Builders & Remodelers Association of Eastern CT and John Bolduc, chief executive officers of the Eastern CT Association of Realtors. The cost of the breakfast is $17 for members and $25 for non-members, with an additional $5 walk-in fee.
