Daily Five: A Supreme Court Case On Racial Balance

2.  Interim Superintendent Randall Collins was asked at a board meeting this week if he feels Groton would have a legal leg to stand on if it wanted to challenge the state’s racial balance law. Collins said it would be a costly endeavor, but he would be willing to discuss it.  Specifically, he was asked about the case "Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1, (2007)” a Supreme Court case in which the Court prohibited assigning students to public schools to achieve racial integration. 

3.  The school department is starting an asbestos removal project at Mary Morrisson Elementary this week. The goal is to have the building empty by noon Saturday. It’ll then take two to three weeks to remove asbestos floor tile from almost every room in the building, then another two to three weeks to replace the floor.  The school department will move everything back in the school by about the second week in August.

4. Sails Up 4 Cancer hosts their annual regatta Sunday, June 24 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Mystic Yachting Center <> . This year, Sails Up 4 Cancer will be hosting the Sunshine Kids as special guests of honor for this year’s Regatta. The day will begin for the Sunshine Kids with a sail aboard the schooner Argia <>  down the Mystic river to watch the start of the Regatta.

5.  Summer is almost here, and Groton Patch is looking for Groton residents to share their summer adventures on our site.
If you'll be traveling to South America, doing charity work, or planning a family reunion, we want to hear about it.
All you have to do is take pictures of your journey and/or write an interesting chronicle about your summer travels along the way.
Students in the Groton area are also encouraged to document their summer adventures. It could be a weekend trip, a day trip, a summer sport league you’re participating in, or even why you’re not vacationing this summer.
