Daily Five: U.S. Secretary Of Defense To Visit Groton

Five Things To Know Wednesday, Nov. 16

1.  Today is Wednesday, Nov. 16.  The National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies, with rain likely and a high temperature of 59 degrees. The low will drop to  46 tonight.

2.  Leon Panetta, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, will visit Electric Boat and meet with shipyard workers and submarine suppliers on Thursday. Panetta will be briefed on the construction process for submaries, visit the test facilities and tour the Mississippi. Panetta will also talk to shipyard workers, submarine suppliers and Navy personnel.

3.  A in districts 1, 2, 3 and 6 discovered a tie vote in district 1 between Joe Baril and Dana Parfitt, Town Clerk Betsy Moukawsher said Tuesdsay. The tie will be remedied at the first new Representative Town Meeting when members of district 1 vote.

4.  The are published on the town website, and appointments are available if homeowners disagree with those assessments. To request an informal review, make an appointment by calling Tyler Technologies at 1-877-394-3379 by Nov. 22. Appointments will be available from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. in the Town Hall Annex. If homeowners are not satisfied after the informal review, they may appeal to the Board of Assessment Appeals in March 2012, after the grand list has been signed and finalized.

5.  Mystic Seaport starts its season of Lantern Light Tours on Nov. 26. The program is a 70-minute play that goes back to 1876. Visitors tour Mystic Seaport on foot take a horse-drawn carriage ride, and experience a traditional dance. Tickets are $28 for adults and $21 for children ages 4-17.
