Daily Five: An Air Quality Alert, The Bus Company and The Chief of Naval Operations

Five Things To Know Thursday, Aug. 23

1.  Today is Thursday, Aug. 23.  The National Weather Service predicts mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of 80 degrees. Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low of 69 degrees.

2.  There’s an air quality alert from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. today for sensitive groups susceptible to breathing problems. Ground -level ozone levels expected to be high, so people with conditions like asthma, chronic bronchitis and lung disease should take it easy today.

3.  Nancy Gilly, of Groton, is the new vice chairman of the board of Southeast
Area Transit, the bus company that serves 10 communities including Groton. She was named to the post on Wednesday. She takes over for Angelo Yeitz of Norwich, who resigned in June.

4.  Adm. Jonathan Greenert, the Chief of Naval Operations, visited Submarine Base New London in Groton Wednesday and spoke to more than 1,300 sailors through a broadcast streamed online, according to a press release from submarine group 2 public affairs. His topics included the future of the submarine force and its importance to the U.S. Navy.

"We must continue to own the undersea domain," the release quoted Greenert as saying.

5.  The summer sale at The Charity Bookshop has been extended through Saturday, if you haven’t checked it out. Books include those written by popular authors like Tom Clancy, Mary Higgins Clark and Patricia Cornwell.  The books store is a non-profit staffed by volunteers, and proceeds benefit Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut.
