1.  Today is Thursday, July 26.  The National Weather Service predicts party sunny skies, a high temperature of 80 degrees and a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The low will fall to 72 tonight, and there's a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some storms could be severe, with gusty winds and hail.

2.  The demolition of the old at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 9. The town will close a section of Packer Road from Cow Hill Road to Route 184 to through traffic, according to an update by the town manager. Demolition would occur for most of the day on Aug. 9, followed by grading on Aug. 10.

3.  A Milford company has finished painting the inside  of the , and refinishing the floors. The house will open back up for normal visiting hours - 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays - on July 30. Tours can be arranged at other times by calling (860) 445-6689.

4.  Groton Long Point has asked the town for about $19,300 to cover cleanup costs from Tropic Storm Irene. The subdivision had originally asked for $82,000, but recently received about $62,600 from FEMA. The council tabled the request at its Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday.

5.  at 2 p.m. today. The sale offers books from popular authors like Tom Clancy, Patricia Cornwell and Nora Roberts, for half its normally low prices. All gardening books and travel books are also half off. The non-profit bookstore benefits The Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut and is staffed by volunteers.
