Daily Five: Town Council Approves Contract With Police Union

Five Things To Know Wednesday, Feb. 8

1.  Today is Wednesday, Feb. 8.  The National Weather Service forecasts a chance of snow, mostly after 3 p.m., and a high temperature of 38 degrees. The low will fall to 27 degrees tonight and snow may continue. The chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

2.  The Town Council voted 7-1 on Tuesday, with one member abstaining, to approve a collective bargaining agreement with the Groton Police Union that would provide raises of 2 percent in July 2012 and 2 percent in July 2013. The contract covers the period from July 1, 2011 until June 30, 2014, and provides a zero increase the first year. The police union represents 68 police officers. Town Councilor Dean Antipas voted against the contract. Councilor Harry Watson abstained for the vote.

3.  The council also voted 8-0 Tuesday, with one member abstaining, to increase some of the rates at the . The Golf Advisory Board and Parks and Recreation Commission endorsed changes to the fees for the 2012 playing season. Changes include a 3 percent increase in season passes, a $1 increase in weekday rates for non-residents and an extension of weekend rates to include Fridays. Councilor Frank O'Beirne, Jr. abstained for the vote.

4.  Groton physical education teachers from 11 schools will receive cricket sets donated by the United States Cricket Association on Feb. 21 at .  The group is giving sets to more than 1,000 schools this year.  The teachers will also receive training from the association and the West Haven Cricket Club. Cricket is a game played on field, where one team bats and tries to score runs, while the other team bowls and fields.

5.  is offering free meals to all employees of Foxwoods Resort Casino this week, through Feb. 12. The meals are part of a new partnership between the casino and the bagel company.
