Daily Five: The Holiday Arts Show And Scruffy Students

Five Things To Know Friday, Nov. 18

1.  Today is Friday, Nov. 18.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies and a high temperature of 46 degrees. The low will drop to 35 tonight.

2.  The Holiday Fine Arts Show & Artisan Gift Salon begins at 11 a.m. today at the Mystic Arts Center.  The annual event offers gifts for sale for a variety of budgets, from pottery to jewelry by local artists, and runs through Dec. 30. Also today, the Winter Art Gala kicks off at 6 p.m. and includes holiday music, food and wine, as well as the chance to buy art.  Purchases at the gala are tax-free and support local artists and center programs. Tickets for the gala event are $40.

3.  The Northeast Academy robotics team will compete in the Robotics Qualifying Tournament from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday at Old Lyme Middle School.  The event is free and open to the public, if you'd like to see what the kids have created.

4.  If some of the male students at Fitch High School look a little scruffy these days, it's for a good cause. The Fitch Key Club started a "No Shave" contest on the day after homecoming to raise awareness of prostate cancer. The club asked male students and faculty not shave their faces until Dec. 1.

5.  The tree lighting and holiday boat parade in Mystic River Park, sponsored By Groton Utilities and Thames Valley Communications, is coming up on Nov. 26. If you keep your boat in the water in early winter, you can join in. The parade of vessels begins at 6:20 p.m. on the Mystic River, then ends at the park. Judging and awards will then take place, and the event is free. For more information, contact the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce at (860) 572-9578.
