Daily Five: Disposing of Your Hurricane Debris

Five Things To Know, Thursday, Nov. 8

 

1.  Today is Thursday, Nov. 8. The National Weather Service predicts rain, a high temperature of 47 degrees and a north wind of 22 to 25 mph, with gusts of up to 41 mph. Tonight will be cloudy and breezy with a low of 37 degrees.

2.  The Groton Public Works Department began picking up woody debris from Hurricane Sandy left along curbs Monday, but there is no schedule for pickups and the department is working with a limited crew. If you want to dispose of your debris quickly, you can bring it to the transfer station on Flanders Road. There’s no fee for hurricane debris through Nov. 10, and station hours have been extended, from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.

3.  The deadline for filing personal property declarations and for filing extensions has been extended to Nov. 15 because of the hurricane. The extension relates to property such as farm machinery, classification of land as farmland, forest land, open space land and various other property, according to the town website.

4.  Mystic Seaport will offer free admission from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Nov. 10 to celebrate the 71st anniversary of the arrival of the 1841 Charles W. Morgan whaleship. The museum will offer various presentations related to the ship, including talks by shipwrights who worked on the restoration and live music. The grounds will be open to the public after for a fireworks show at 7 p.m.

5.  Union Baptist Church will hold its holiday fair from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at the church on High Street. The event will offer a Silent Auction, a luncheon for $6.50 (soup, sandwich, beverage & pie), gift baskets, craft tables, baked goods, dolls and kid's crafts.
