In this season of giving but within the context of the tough economic times, it is always nice to read about local businesses giving back. has adopted a local family through the Norwich Human Services Office holiday ‘Adopt-a-Family’ program. Did you know that you can post your own announcements about your business or nonprofit for free on our announcements page?

3. In lieu of having a holiday party this year for the southeastern Connecticut Patches, the group decided to make donations to local charities. In Groton, we made a donation to the emergency medical fund. This group works with and was instrumental in helping to find homes for the earlier this year.

4. State Sen. Andrew Maynard (D-Stonington), who represents Groton, was honored as a 2011 Legislator of the Year by the Connecticut Police Chief’s Association.
