Daily Five: Groton Heights School, the Fitch Ball Field and the Police Station

Five Things To Know, Tuesday, Feb. 28

1.  Today is Tuesday, Feb. 28.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a high temperature of 45 degrees and a breeze of 11 to 21 mph.  Clouds will increase tonight and the low will fall to 27 degrees.

2.  The group organized to recommend the best future use of Groton Heights School will suggest that the town keep the property until the economy improves, then market it. The Groton Heights School Reuse Task Force will give its final report to the Town Council during its meeting at 6 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex.

The task force had earlier said for its magnet school in Waterford. The group was told in December that Project LEARN has no interest in acquiring the property.

3.  Stonington First Selectman Ed Habarek and other Stonington selectmen are expected to attend tonight’s meeting of the Groton Town Council to talk about Mystic & Noank Library. Groton Councilor Bruce Flax asked for Residents in Groton have complained that the town contributes more than it share of money for the library, and Stonington does not contribute enough.

4.  On Feb. 13, Representatives of the Groton Board of Education, town and the Mystic Schooners met to talk about this year’s baseball season and potential changes to the contract to deal with the team’s nonpayment of bills. for improvements to the field.  Councilors and school board members who attend this evening’s council meeting may meet in executive session on Tuesday to get an update.

5.  The council is also expected to learn more today about a potential $5.1 million renovation of the Groton town police station.  According to the town manager’s report, station renovations have been in the capital budget for two years, but the council hasn’t discussed them much.  Police Chief Michael Crowley and Public Works Director Gary Schneider are expected to outline the needs of the police station facility and to answer questions at tonight’s council meeting.
