Daily Five: Groton Paraprofessionals, a Drive-Thru Flu Clinic and Fur Seals At Mystic Aquarium

1.  Today is Wednesday, Oct. 17. The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies and a high temperature of 61 degrees. Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low of 49 degrees.

2.  The negotiation committee of the Groton Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. on Oct. 24 in the school administration building to negotiate a new contract with paraprofessionals. Teachers and paraprofessionals in Groton have not received a pay raise in three years.

3.  Several health districts are sponsoring a drive-thru flu clinic from 10 a.m. until noon on Oct. 27 at Fitch High School if you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet. Registration is required because vaccines are limited; contact Kris Magnussen at (860) 448-4882 ext. 331 or kmagnussen@llhd.org. You must be 18 or older.

The drive-thru clinic is part of a regional emergency preparedness exercise for agencies including the Ledge Light Health District, Northeast District Department of Health, Groton Community Emergency Response Team and Groton Emergency Management.

4.  Mystic Aquarium has brought in two northern fur seals from New York Aquarium to the Mystic’s outdoor Pacific northwest habitat. Jack, 10, weighs 220 pounds and Sam, 9, weighs 215 pounds. The seals are siblings and were born at New York Aquarium, according to a press release from Mystic Aquarium. The aquarium last had fur seals on display in 2009.

5.  The Animal Welfare League and Sally Beauty Supply in Groton are collecting pet food through Halloween to distribute locally to help pets in need.
