Daily Five: Groton's July 4th Parade Winners Named

Five Things To Know, Friday, July 6

1.  Today is Friday, July 6.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies and a high temperature of 82 degrees. The low will fall to 70 tonight.

2.  Congratulations to the winners of The town council will recognize the groups at its meeting Tuesday. The list is below:

  • Best Costume: Chelsea Groton Bank
  • Best Use of Theme: Westbrook Junior Colonials Fife and Drum Corps
  • Best Music: Yalesville Fife and Drum Corp.
  • Youth Participation: Highland Farms Vocational Agricultural Center
  • Best Float: Wayne’s Barber Shop
  • Most Patriotic: The Second Continental Light Dragoons
  • Judges' Choice: Center Groton Fire Department

3.  The band High Times will play at 6:30 p.m. today in Washington Park in Groton City, if you're looking for an activity to start the weekend. The performance is part of the Concerts in the Park 2012 series, and you can bring a picnic. All of the concerts are free.

4.  is Saturday, all day, at Waterfront Park in New London. The event, which includes a parade of ships, a festival of food and musical performances and fireworks, is celebrating the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and writing of The Star-Spangled Banner.

5.  is hosting a children's workshop by local author and illustrator Anna Westbrook at 1 p.m. on July 25 at the library. The workshop, about making a journal, is geared to children in grades 1 to 5. Westbrook wrote and illustrated the picture book "You Can’t Read This Book", and will bring excerpts from her own childhood journals.
