Daily Five: Mystic Bridge Closure Dates Changed

Five Things To Know, Wednesday, March 6

1.  Today is Wednesday, March 6.  The National Weather Service has issued the following forecast for Groton:

  • A slight chance of rain and snow before 9 a.m., then rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 41. Windy, with a northeast wind 17 to 22 mph, increasing to 24 to 29 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 39 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
  • Wednesday night: Rain before midnight, then snow likely. Low around 34. Windy, with a northeast wind 31 to 36 mph, with gusts as high as 49 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

2.  The 54-hour closure of the Mystic drawbridge has been moved to March 11, 12 and 13.

The bridge closure will take place from 7 a.m., Monday, March 11 until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13. During that time, the bridge will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

The closure was to allow the installation of a vehicle barrier gate system that will span Route 1 on the Stonington side of the bridge. Businesses in downtown Mystic will remain open during the closure.

3.  Groton Babe Ruth Baseball holds spring registration for players ages 13 to 15, from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. today in the Groton Municipal Building. The cost to register is $65 per player and includes the uniform shirt, hat and socks. 4.  The Groton City Council voted unanimously Monday to extend the license and waive the security deposit to Robert and Patricia Garcia to run a concession stand at Eastern Point Beach for the 2013 season. The couple has run the concession stand at the beach for 28 years.

5.  Financial advisor Suzanne K. Giorno, of Merrill Lynch and lawyer Maria Piro Fusaro will hold a free educational session on estate planning and family law at 6 p.m. on March 13 at Mystic HealthCare & Rehabilitation.
