Daily Five: Northeast Academy, Two Assistant Principals And The Annual Lobster Dinner

Five Things To Know Monday, July 16

1.  Today is Monday, July 16. The National Weather Service forecasts a 30 percent chance of showers before 7 a.m., then mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of 85 degrees. The low will drop to 70 tonight.

2.  Northeast Academy has made two key changes for the coming school year: it will provide all-day kindergarten to all students, and add another third grade class, according to a briefing memo by Interim Superintendent Randall Collins.

In past years, Northeast had to shift kindergarten students to S.B. Butler Elementary if there wasn’t enough room.  so it added a classroom to solve that problem.

The school accomplished this by shifting teacher assignments and moving classrooms.

There will be four third grade classes at Northeast this year, the memo said.

3.  The school department has hired two new assistant principals. Judy Leonard will be assistant principal of Northeast Academy, and Bob Walsh will be assistant principal of .

Leonard has served as interim assistant principal at Northeast Academy several times, has worked as a library media specialist, and has served on Groton’s district technology and mentor steering committees.

Walsh has served as interim assistant principal of Catherine Kolnaski Magnet and has worked as a physical education teacher. He is also coach of a program to encourage positive behavior and chairman of the Kolnaski Wellness Committee.

4.  and other local sponsors hosted the 4th Annual Operation Lobster Dinner on Sunday, which treats active duty and retired military and their families to a traditional New England lobster dinner. The event, which was hosted for the second time by Naval Submarine Base New London, included a visit by Work Vessels for Veterans, which provides laptops to veterans readjusting to civilian life.

5.  in Groton City is taking donations for its annual used book sale. The library is seeking new or gently used fiction, non-fiction and children’s books, and books on CD and DVD.

Books must be in good condition and may be dropped off during library hours. The library does not accept cassettes, VHS tapes, encyclopedias, magazines, or outdated law, medical or travel guides. The annual book sale will be held on October 19 and 20.
