Daily Five: School Board To Hear Redistricting Options Tonight

Five Things To Know Monday, Feb. 27

1.  Today is Monday, Feb. 27.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a high temperature of 50 degrees and a breeze of 8 to 11 mph, increasing to 17 to 20 mph.  The low will drop to 35 degrees tonight.

2.  Superintendent Paul Kadri will outline to the Board of Education at its meeting at 5:30 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex.

Both options would divide middle schools this way: students from Charles Barnum Elementary, Northeast Academy Elementary and S.B. Butler Elementary would go to Cutler Middle School. Students from Mary Morrisson Elementary, Pleasant Valley Elementary, Claude Chester Elementary and Catherine Kolnaski Magnet School would go to West Side Middle School.

The options have different elementary redistricting plans. Part of the purpose of today's meeting is to hear public comment.

3.  The Groton Town Council and Board of Education will hold a joint meeting on Tuesday to discuss, among other topics, a $1.4 million supplemental request for the schools.

The board is expected to ask for the money to pay for interior work at Cutler and West Side middle schools - which has already started - and for portables at the schools. Groton is eligible for state reimbursement and expects to get about half back, which would bring the local cost down to $700,000.

4.  Catherine Kolnaski Magnet School will hold "Read Across America Day"- which celebrates the birthday of Dr. Seuss - from 2 p.m. until 2:15 p.m. and from 2:45 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Friday, March 2.  Guests were invited to the school to help celebrate by reading their favorite Dr. Seuss or children's book to the students.

5.  Jeff Williams, of the town Emergency Operations Center, will speak about about disaster preparedness during a program from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. on March 13 at the Groton Senior Center. To register, call (860) 441-6795
