Daily Five: Fitch Middle School Promotes Last Eighth Grade Class Today

Five Things To Know Thursday, June 14

1.  Today is Thursday, June 14. The National Weather Service predicts fog a chance of drizzle before 9 a.m., but otherwise mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of 72 degrees. The low will drop to 57 tonight.

2.  The consultant is researching birth records to determine future enrollment. The Branford consulting firm Milone & MacBroom obtained birth records from the state Tuesday of all children born in Groton, by address, for the last ten years. The data will be used to estimate class sizes five years from now so the redistricting plan works for at least that long, company representatives said.

3.  Fitch Middle School will hold its last eighth grade promotion assembly at 10:15 a.m. today. The school is closing because Groton is consolidating from three middle schools to two. Students at Cutler and West Side middle schools will hold their eighth grade ceremonies at 9 a.m.

4.  Interim Superintendent Randall Collins said Tuesday Groton would be able to use a consultant already under contract with the school department to complete a survey of residents asking why the “Phase II” referendum failed and what they want in the future. The town is conducting the survey to get direction on the next round of school construction.

Collins is expected to speak to Town Manger Mark Oefinger this week about the survey.

In May 2011, that would have reconfigured grades and built one new middle school. The plan relied on state subsidies and had an anticipated reimbursement rate to reduce the cost to $65.8 million.

5.  The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on June 21 to welcome Frogeez Frozen Yogurt to Groton. in the mall across from Big Y near on March 21. The store offers four self-serve frozen yogurt machines with up to three flavors each.
