Daily Five: Update On The Mystic Education Center

Five Things To Know Tuesday, Dec. 13

1.  Today is Tuesday, Dec. 13.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a high temperature of 45 degrees and a north wind of 7 to 13 mph.
Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of 35.

2.  The state has decided to issue a request for proposals to seek potential developers interested in using the Mystic Education Center Property.  If the state finds a developer, the property would be offered to Groton before it was transferred. Town Manager Mark Oefinger will update the Town Council on the status of the property during the council's committee of the whole meeting at 7 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex.  , forcing the town park and recreation department to relocate programs.

3.  The Board of Education has filed its new contract for school administrators with the town clerk. The contract is binding unless the town council rejects it within 30 days of the Dec. 6 filing.  The three-year contract includes raises of zero the first year, 1 percent the second year and 2 percent the third. Administrators will have higher co-payments for medical care and prescriptions and will contribute 19 percent toward benefits the first year, 20 percent the second year and 21 percent the third year. They will also be required to work two additional days per year by the end of the contract.

4.  The town council is considering a request by a company that wants to install solar panels on the Flanders Road landfill.  Borrego Solar Systems is asking for a "letter of intent" from the council that would allow the business to have discussions with Connecticut Light & Power. The solar company wants rent the landfill property from the town, then install solar panels that generate electricity.

5.  The Groton Senior Center will hold a music and dance benefit from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday called "Heal the Land." The event will collect a $5 donation at the door to benefit the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services Fund. Participants will include members of senior centers in Groton, Colchester, Guilford, Ledyard, Mansfield, Plainfield and Norwich.
