Daily Five: The 10 People You Say Hello To

Five Things You Need To Know for Monday, Nov. 21

  1. It’s ‘World Hello Day.’ Obscure? Not in 180 countries.  The holiday was created after the Yom Kippur War in an effort to help promote peace between Egypt and Israel though communication over violence to settle disputes. You’re supposed to say hello to 10 people you don’t know. Hello!
  2. Today is the last Bill Library ‘Toddler Time’ play date -- the fun, one-on-one story and song program for children ages 18-36 months -- of the season. Surely caregivers and kids will miss attending.
  3. Municipally speaking, the Groton Heights School Reuse Task Force meets at 5:30 p.m. this evening in the municipal building at 295 Meridian St. Check out the what-to-do-with-the-school survey results at  www.groton-ct.gov.
  4. Lest you forget, Wednesday is a half-day for Groton school kids, so plan accordingly. Kindergarten through 5th grade gets out at 1:12 p.m., 6th through 8th grade middle schoolers are dismissed at 12:32 p.m. and Fitch High School students are done at 12 noon.
  5. There are just four days until Black Friday – for lots of us an important opportunity to realize some deep discounts on stuff we need (want?) for Christmas. But even bigger, and perhaps more important a shopping day is the Second annual Small Business Saturday, a day to support small business. Love the line on Facebook/SmallBusinessSaturday that reads, ‘If millions of Americans shop small, it will be huge.’ We like that.
