Daily Five: The Education Budget And Redistricting

Five Things To Know Friday, Feb. 10

1.  Today is Friday, Feb. 10.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a high temperature of 45 degrees and a west wind of 9 to 15 mph. Clouds will increase tonight, the low will fall to 31 degrees and there's a 40 percent chance of snow, mostly after 4 a.m.

2.  The Groton Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. Monday, at a location to be announced, and is expected to vote on .  If approved, the budget proposal would be the third year of a zero increase for Groton Public Schools. The board is also expected to receive an initial report Monday about redistricting Groton's middle schools.

3.  The 2nd Annual Black History Month Gospel choir concert will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Naval Submarine Base New London's Shepherd of the Sea Chapel in Groton. Gospel Singer Joshua Nelson, who has sung with Aretha Franklin at the Lincoln Center, will sing at the event. Church choirs that will also participate include: Mount Olive Baptist Church in Hartford, in Groton, New Life Church in Ledyard, Walls Temple AME Zion Church in New London, Emanuel Church of God in Christ in Norwich and Shiloh Baptist Church in Hartford.

4.  The Groton Business Association will hold its breakfast meeting from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. on Feb. 16 at on Poquonnock Road. Admission is free, and you can network with other business owners. John Johnson, chairman of OpSail2012CT, will talk about OpSail coming to Connecticut this summer.

5.  Groton Public Library is sponsoring an about the life of Elizabeth Keckly, a dressmaker and confidante of Mary Todd Lincoln. Actress Stephanie Jackson will portray Keckly in the production, They Called Me Lizzy: From Slavery to the White House, by The East Haddam Stage Company. The program is free.
