Daily Five: The Board of Education Meets Tonight

1.  Today is Monday, May 14.  The National Weather Service predicts a slight chance of showers, cloudy skies, and a high temperature of 65 degrees. Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a 30 percent chance of showers and a low of 55 degrees.

2.  The Groton Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex. Agenda items include the proposed 2012-13 school calendar and a technology plan for the public schools,

This will be the first public meeting of the school board since Superintendent Paul Kadri was placed on leave and Mary Anne Butler was appointed acting superintendent.

3.  The Groton Town Council has decided to have a representative present during negotiations between the Board of Education and the teacher’s union. The state determines the window for negotiations and has notified Groton that negotiations will begin in late summer. The Groton Education Association represents about 450 teachers in the public schools.

4.  Groton will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. on May 24 in the Town Hall Annex on a proposed $5.6 million plan to rebuild Crystal Lake Road. The project, near the entrance to the sub base, would include 2,050 feet of road widening, realignment of the intersection of Military Highway and improvements to the Route 12 intersection. The project would be paid for with 80 percent federal money, 10 percent state money and 10 percent local money.

5.  Groton Senior Citizens Club 55 is donating $500 to the Bioscience and Environmental Technology program at . Students from Grasso Tech dug up the original perennial garden at the senior center, saved the plants, and then replanted the garden at the new senior center when it was finished. Senior Citizens Club 55 is also giving $500 to the Jabez Smith House, according to the town manager’s report.
