Daily Five: The CMTs Start in Groton Today

Five Things To Know Friday, March 1.

1.  Today is Friday, March 1. The National Weather Service predicts mostly cloudy skies, a slight chance of snow showers, then rain and a high temperature of 46 degrees. The low will drop to 29 degrees tonight.

2.  The Connecticut Mastery Test will be given to students starting today through March 28, with most of the testing done in the first two weeks, according to the Groton school department. Students in grades 3 through 8 take the CMT in reading, writing and math. Students in grades 5 though 8 also take the test in science.

"We ask for your assistance as we encourage our students to do their absolute best," Sean McKenna, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction wrote in a letter to parents, posted on the school department website.

3.  At Fitch High School, students will take the Connecticut Academic Performance Test from March 5 through March 15. The CAPT is a standardized test given statewide to tenth graders to assess their performance in math, reading, writing and science.

4.  Groton Public Library is holding a free showing at 7 p.m. today of the movie “Kenny”, an Australian film as part of its Independent Film Series. The movie is rated PG-13 and runs for 100 minutes. On Saturday at 2 p.m., the library will also offer a free family program celebrating Australia. Pete Onofrio, who plays the didgeridoo, an ancient wind instrument, will talk about the aboriginal people and their music.

5.  If you want to quit smoking but need a little help, the Fairview Odd Fellows Home in Groton is offering a free smoking cessation program at 4 p.m. on Monday. The program runs for one hour on Mondays through April 8.
