Daily Five: Consolidation of Groton Fire Districts, The Governor And Portable Classrooms

Five Things To Know, Monday, July 23

1.  Today is Monday, July 23.  The National Weather Service predicts mostly cloudy skies, a high temperature of 80 degrees and isolated showers and thunderstorms. Storms will be scattered tonight and may produce gusty wind, heavy rain and lightening. The low will drop to 71 degrees.

2.  The Town Council’s public safety committee meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Town Hall Annex and will discuss topics including consolidation of the fire districts. A former director of the Poquonnock Bridge Fire District Committee told the council recently that to control their own departments and equipment.

3.  Gov. Dannel P. Malloy will give the opening remarks at the National District Attorneys Association’s summer conference, which will be held at 8:30 a.m. at the in Groton.  This is the first time the group has held its conference in Connecticut, according to a press release by the governor.

4.  The school department has received five bids from contractors on the portable classrooms for Cutler and West Side Middle schools, according to a briefing memo by Interim Superintendent Randall Collins.

“If all goes well, we will sign the contract next week,” the memo said.  “The low bidder confirms that he can complete the project by September 23.”

5.  Two administrators have started new jobs in the school department, the briefing memo said. Karen Bryer, former assistant principal at will serve as district K-12 technology coordinator. Henry Martinez, the former distric K-12 math coordinator, will serve as assistant principal at Barnum.
