Daily Five: The Mystic River Bridge, Returning Submariners and A Car Show

Five Things To Know, Tuesday, April 2

1.  Today is Tuesday, April 2. The National Weather Service predicts mostly sunny skies, a high temperature of 45 degrees and a breeze of 17 to 26 mph. The low will fall to 24 degrees tonight.

2.  The Mystic River Bridge will be temporarily closed to vehicles and pedestrian traffic from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. on April 10 and 11. 

During the closure, traffic will be detoured from Route 1 to I-95 along Allyn Street in Groton and Route 27 in Stonington. Local businesses will remain open. Traffic signs and other devices will be used to guide drivers along the detour route.

The temporary closure is needed to finish the start-up and balancing of the bridge as the project nears completion, according to a press release by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. 

3.  The Los Angles-class attack submarine USS Alexandria (SSN 757) will return to Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton on Wednesday, following a six-month deployment to the areas of U.S. Africa and Europe, according to a news release by Submarine Group 2 public affairs.

The vessel traveled more than 34,000 miles during the deployment, the release said.

4.  The Connecticut Department of Social Services’ Medicare Rx-Xpress bus will be in Groton from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on April 18 at Groton Human Services if you need help. The bus provides help with Medicaid and Medicare assistance, HUSKY medical insurance, food stamp applications and information. Appointments are recommended; call (860) 441-6760.

5.  The Auto Zone on Long Hill Road in Groton will host a Mustang Show from noon until 3 p.m. on April 20, if you’re a car lover. For more information, call (860) 445-5151.
